Guidelines for Annual Show

The Big Canoe Artists Club annual exhibition is our signature show, intended to showcase the fine art talents of our local resident artists.  This document includes general guidelines for all artists to follow.  Specific procedures for each year’s show will be documented separately.

Guidelines for All Artists
  • All art must be ORIGINAL.  No prints, giclees, or other reproductions allowed. Photographic artwork must be the intiial print of a limited edition print run. No ai-gernerated artwork.
  • All art must be recent, completed within the previous two years, and not previously shown or displayed.
  • Artists may contribute up to five (5) pieces.
  •  Consider having two (2) backup pieces available and ready to hang if work sells early in the show.
  • All art must be ready to hang or display (more guidelines below).
  • Artwork will not be accepted if artist does not follow submission guidelines.
  • All art must be for sale at the show (pre-sales and "Not for Sale" work are not allowed).
  • All art sold will include a 10% commission back to the club.
  • Artists will be paid for sold work within 7-10 days after the show, minus commission and any applicable credit card fees.
  • All unsold art must be picked up after the end of the show, according to published timelines. The club is not responsible for artwork left after the designated pick-up window.  If you cannot pick up the artwork yourself, please arrange for someone else to pick it up.
  • Artist must be a member of the club in good standing.
  • Any artist contributing work must volunteer in some capacity for the show.  Volunteer positions will be communicated separately.
  • Artists must understand the hanging committee is the ultimate judge as to display, dependent on adherence to guidelines, exhibit space, number of entries, lighting, and other factors that may be outside the club’s control.
  • All reasonable care will be exercised in the handling and exhibiting of work.  Sole liability for the art rests with the artist.

Guidelines for 2-D Art

All hanging art must follow these guidelines.  This includes paintings in all mediums, drawings, photography, or hanging sculpture.  Artwork that does not follow these guidelines will not be installed.
  • Artwork must be wired appropriately and ready to hang.  See the club’s framing guidelines on the club website for instructions.
  • No sawtooth hangers allowed.
  • Frames must be in good condition.
  • Canvas/substrate must be secured appropriately inside the frame.
  • Plexiglass is recommended for items needing clear cover to prevent breakage.
  • Unframed pieces on canvas are only allowed if the artwork is on a museum mount, at least 1 1/2 inches deep, and with painted sides.  The exception is a piece of art that would be distorted from the artist’s intent if it were to be framed (i.e., sculptural pieces).
  • Artwork must be labeled on the front with the name of the piece and artist’s name so the hanging committee can correctly identify the piece.  Note that this can be handwritten – the club will provide printed labels for final display.
  • There is no size limit on art.  However, if an artwork is larger than 24”x30”, the artist must provide an appropriate easel for displaying that piece.

Guidelines for 3-D Art

Any work that is not hung, including ceramics, metals, stone, glass, wood, basketry, jewelry, fiber, paper, mixed media.
  • All sculptures must be labeled appropriately.
  • Sculptures must be ready to display on pedestals upon arrival unless prior arrangements are made for installation.
  • The hanging committee reserves the right to refuse any work it deems unsuitable or misrepresented.
  • Sculpture may not exceed 48 " in any direction.
  • Installation artists must install their own work and make prior arrangements with hanging committee.
